Route Radio
Sunday loop
Tap the radio to look closer. Turn its dial for another route.
D, because you headed north-east. Major, for a flat run. 81 beats a minute, from your 8:20/mi.
How it works
01Every route is a station5.8 mi
Your runs, rides, walks and hikes are the stations, in order of distance, and the dial clicks from one to the next. The display draws each route as you turn. Scan lists them all, Back and Next step through, and on Shuffle the radio keeps tuning to another one whenever a song ends.
02The route plays the notesD Major
The route is laid over a honeycomb of notes, the tiles at the top of the page. Every tile it crosses plays, in order. Tiles that touch are a fifth or a third apart, so any three that touch make a chord. That’s why any route makes a tune, and the chords underneath follow where it goes.
03Which way you went picks the keyD
The key is the home note the song keeps coming back to. We draw a line from your start to the farthest point you reached, and its compass direction picks the key. Neighbouring directions give keys that sound close. This one went north-east, so it plays in D.
04When you went picks the moodMajor
The mode is the mood of the scale, which seven notes the song uses. This file had no clock, so the climb picks it instead. Flat plays Major, hilly plays Dorian, mountains play Minor. This one plays Major, bright and settled.
05How fast you went sets the tempo81 bpm
BPM is beats per minute, how fast the song goes. 60 is one beat a second; 120 is two. A run at 8:51/mi plays at 76. Faster goes up to 120, slower down to 56. This one went 8:20/mi, so 81. The dot below beats at that speed.
06Keep it
Save a video of the radio playing your route, sized for a story. We read the route and nothing else, and it stays in your browser.
